In English we have only one way to say this or that, in addiction to the plural forms these and those, in spanish we have three demostrative adjectives each with four forms.
To say this/these we use the adjective este/estos/estas depending whether is singulsr/plural male or femele
este coche...this car esta casa......this house (because casa is femenine)
estos árboles.......these trees ( masculine and plural)
estas galletas.......these cookies (femenine and plural)
To say that we use ese /ese refers to something that is close to the person spoken to, but no to the speaker. It also has four forms
ese cuchillo.........that knife esos cuchillos.......those knifes (masculin and plural)
esa casa..............that house esas casas............those houses (femenine and plural)
there is another way to say that when refers to something that is far away for both the speaker and te person spoken to
aquel libro.......that book aquellos libros.......those books(masculine and plural)
aquella niña....that girl aquellas niñas........those girls(femenine and plural)
