There are a number of ways to talk about how long ago something happened beyond mere años/meses/días/horas and minutos (years,months,days,hours and minutes)
un rato...........a while
mucho rato....a long while
mucho tiempo...a long time
un par de horas...a couple of hours
unos minutos.......a few minutes
unos años............a few years
We use the verb hacer to ask or describe how long something happens
- ¿cuando llegaste a casa?.................when did yo arrive at home?
- llegué hace unos minutos.................I arrived a few minutes ago
-hace mucho tiempo que no te había visto........long time I had not see you
-sí!! es verdad!! almenos un par de años..........yes!! that's true!! at least a couple of years
-hace unos minutos que terminé........................I finished a few minutes ago
-estudiaré un rato.............................................I will study for a while
